The Life Is Good
I
am from the Dominican Republic, where some people don’t have much opportunity.
In August 2011, I came to the United States, and I didn’t know English. When I started
school I didn’t understand, but I kept fighting to do well in the school. I believe
that to get my dream I have to fight against the barriers such as economic,
language and prejudice. Some dreams are hard to get, but not impossible.
I remember when I was a freshman and all ESL students took
a math quiz. After it was finished, I got
higher grades than the people who spoke English, and in that moment I thought
that now I will never give up. I have to persevere and force myself to learn
English. In the classroom there were some students who spoke English, I think the teacher acts differently with me
because I am Latin and sometimes I feel bad when some teachers are explaining something
to me and they think I don’t understand
and I need an interpreter.
Although I am still fighting barriers, people can still
be mean and talk about me behind my back. I ignore them. I just want to be a
good student without problems. Spanish speakers also offend me in English
because they know I might not understand what they are saying. But for me
anything is possible because I try my best in all of my classes to achieve my
goals because I always believe in myself and what I can do.
My beliefs have led me to make good decisions, receive many
honors, and make my parents and my ESL teachers very proud of me. I feel glad
with myself for all I have done. I have learned about great things, for example,
not being shy when speaking English with others. When I am talking and they don’t
understand what I am talking, but I keep trying and I never give up or feel bad
about it.
I came from a
country that is hard to get opportunities and I believe I have to fight hard to
achieve my goals and dreams, but it is not impossible to get what I want. I believe
that I can fight for a good life and break down any barriers.
